Those whom know me well, know I have a huge thirst for adventure and an affinity with saltwater sport fishing especially.

After venturing out to fish the shallows for barracuda and whatever else that decided to bite, we caught our haul. We landed 3 barracuda, a jack crevalle, and a mangrove snapper.

After reeling up the lines and packing up, I thought we were done. Then we started heading out of the shallows to the “blue waters” that extend down to 400 ft. in a matter of yards from the shallows. As we began to pick up speed, roughly 10 mph., our amazing guides Elowin and Donald said we should head back out tomorrow to do some Blue Water fishing which means….big game sport fishing. Which means Wahoo, Kingfish, King Mackerel, Cobia, Yellowefin Tuna, Marlin….etc. Now hearing that the wahoo and kingfish fishing was heating up…I was jumping out of my skin just thinking about it. Unfortunately for us, this was our last day on the island so there wouldn’t be that opportunity this time….or so I presumed.

Upon talking about sport fishing with our captain, (whom I fished with 2 years ago already) I failed to see that Donald had tossed out a giant topwater plug and that we were in fact trolling the blue water on our way back for whatever decided to take a stab at it. I turned to Elowin and said..."You gotta be shitting me". I was so stoked we were still going for something big!

It couldn’t have been 5 minutes later that that huge Penn spinning reel about got spooled of 300 yards of line in 5 seconds flat. I immediately grabbed the pole without hesitation and started cranking as hard as I could, as fast as I could, to pick up the slack.

I knew it was a big game fish and I was hoping it would be a big, beautiful wahoo…and it was! Running on pure adrenaline, I was able to gain ground on him and Donald gaffed him when we got him next to boat. At that very moment I yelled “Waaaahhhhoooooooooooo” as loud as I could in a thunderous roar!!!

I am still in awe of saltwater sport fishing and never miss an opportunity to do so. It’s experiences like this that make me want to travel further every day because you just never know what’s in store for you until you get out there.
