This past week Buffalo Media Group headed down to Placencia, Belize to cover permit fishing at the newly completed Blue Horizon Lodge. Let me first say…WOW! This place was amazing and a world-class operation. Founded in 1997 by legendary Belizean fly fishing guide Lincoln Westby, Blue Horizon Fly Fishing operates inside the protected waters of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, in an area known as “Permit Alley”. This epicenter of the flats fishing is known as the finest permit fishing in the Caribbean, attracting anglers from around the world to our fabled flats.

We had basically all of one full day to capture an outing in Permit Alley with our guide and angler. Permit is the name of game here and they are on of the most sought after species here in Belize. They are not for the faint of heart, it’s a hunt across numerous flats chasing down the elusive Permit. As anyone who knows and they will tell you, they are one of the most picky, finicky, and challenging fish to catch. Aside from the tide, moon phases, wind patterns, etc….one of the most elemental things is a perfect cast. This is what makes Permit fishing so special and amazing, the thrill of the hunt!

We are honored to share time with the legendary expert guide and owner Lincoln Westby. For those who know, his reputation goes without saying and those that do not, he is IT….the real deal. He is one of those living legends of saltwater fishing lore. What amazes me is that he leads and guides all the time still…in his eighties. Lincoln recently just passed the 80 milestone back in January and was praised by many in the fishing industry. With a heavy creole accent and a kind smile on his face, he’s always ready for a good laugh with guests and employees. For those of you who follow from Minnesota, he is the “Al Lindner of Permit Fishing.”

Aside from chasing permit, we had an opportunity to peel off for the afternoon with our guide and track down some bonefish. What a treat that was as far as shoots go. We successfully landed a decent sized bonefish and were able to capture a couple shots before it was released.

This was an amazing experience and we were motivated beyond belief to be doing what we love, shooting and fishing. Thanks so much Blue Horizon Lodge for the superior hospitality and planning. This turned out to be a huge success as we all thought it would after two years in the making. We look forward to seeing you all again and can’t wait for the next opportunity to shoot for you all. Happy Trails and Tight Lines!
